This university was founded in 1919 and its motto is "for the free development of the spirit" . Hosts more than 19,000 students. Addition prestigious academic campus and has a remarkable social presence: a very large green area, with meadows, ponds, towering trees and statues, a great art gallery open to the city radio and TV; symphony orchestra, y. .. to a football team in the First Division.
Because earthquake 27/02/2010, was burned by the Faculty of Chemical substances in explosion laboratories and the building remains a holiday. Being university community awareness in political affairs, was harshly punished by the military dictatorship following the coup of 9/11/1973. A chilling fact: 58 students at the university were killed or disappeared by the criminal regime of Pinochet. Some memorials are remembered.
